Looking for a great graphic novel for a young person struggling with life with braces? Today our Vancouver orthodontists share ‘Smile’ by Raina Telgemeier. This fun book depicts the emotional ups and downs of dealing with braces, and much much more.
‘Smile’ is a graphic novel about young Raina who just wants to be a 'normal' 6th grader. One memorable night, Raina has a bad fall and severely damages her front teeth, resulting in a long and frustrating ordeal involving surgery, braces, headgear… and a retainer equipped with false teeth!
But that's not all that young Raina needs to deal with, there's still all the day-to-day challenges that come with being in grade 6, including boys and all the usual social issues.
Coping with braces treatment can be difficult for young kids and teens when all they want is to fit in with their friends. 'Smile' deals with young Raina's orthodontic ordeal, as well as an earthquake, boy trouble, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.
