Orthodontic patients often choose to have their teeth whitened after their treatment. Here, our Maple Ridge orthodontists explain why.
After having braces for months or even years, many of our patients notice the areas on their teeth where their brackets were adhered are lighter in colour than the rest of their teeth.
This happens because food and drink can cause teeth to become discoloured over time, but during the whole time you had braces, the small area covered by the brackets has been sealed off from exposure.
The result of this is that many patients' teeth look a bit splotchy and uneven after their orthodontic treatment is complete. The exposed areas appear to be extra yellow in contrast with the areas that have been protected.
This uneven appearance will diminish over time, but some patients prefer not to wait, and choose to undergo teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening remove stains on the surface of the teeth, and lightens the actual colour of the teeth as well, resulting in a more even, brighter smile.
