‘Smile’ is a graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier, and it's all about the challenges of being a middle schooler going through orthodontic treatment.
‘Smile’ by Raina Telgemeier is about Raina, who would like nothing better than to just be a normal 6th grader.
One night, however, Raina has a fall that does some serious damage to her two front teeth. The results? A long and frustrating orthodontic ordeal involving surgery, braces, some cringe-worthy headgear… and even a retainer with false teeth attached.
On top of it all, Raina has to deal with all the usual confusion about boys and the social awkwardness that is an inevitable part of being in middle schooler.
Dealing with braces and orthodontic treatment can be trying, for children and teens especially, when all they really want is to feel ‘normal’ and fit in with their friends.
